Gain Skills in Translational Science and Research Methodology

Students who complete the M.S. in Medical Sciences with a Health Outcomes and Implementation concentration will learn to:

  • Develop, implement and evaluate clinical and community-based research studies that aim to promote health and improve specific health measurements, also known as health outcomes.
  • Manage databases and perform statistical analysis on research findings.
  • Conduct health outcomes assessments and clinical effectiveness research, which examines the best treatments for patients based on evidence.
  • Evaluate the effects of health policies on health outcomes, quality of care and costs.
  • Translate evidence-based treatments and programs into practice through dissemination and implementation science methodologies.

Conduct Research in the Fields of Implementation or Prevention Science

Each student will conduct a mentored research project, where they are expected to design and execute a unique research study that will lead to a written thesis and a publishable manuscript or final capstone project demonstrating independent research. Enrollment in the program is limited to ensure one-on-one faculty mentorship with experts in the field of health care research design, prevention science and biomedical informatics.

Who should apply?

The on-campus master’s degree is ideal for traditional graduate students and medical professionals who are interested in pursuing a career in health science research or who would like to complement their clinical practice or other research interests with the ability to design, implement and interpret large-scale studies of health care programs and policies. The department accepts applications from students with undergraduate degrees in a variety of disciplines.

A total of 25 credits earned during the master’s degree can be put toward the doctoral degree, if a student is admitted to the doctoral program.
